Hugo Wong is a writer, photographer, and videographer based in Victoria, B.C. He is currently a student at the University of Victoria studying political science and writing. He currently hosts U in the Ring on CFUV 101.9 FM, a weekly campus news show.
From 2014-15, he was the editor-in-chief of the Martlet, the University of Victoria’s independent student newspaper. That year, he was nominated for a John H. McDonald award for best political reporting in Canadian student journalism.
As the Martlet’s photo editor, he was responsible for capturing breaking news and sports, but also translating ideas and feelings into conceptual images that illustrated a controversial university donation, amenorrhea in athletes, an incorrect university help-line, and much more. As the Martlet’s video co-ordinator, he created a series of interactive videos for a student election, allowing viewers to skip to the questions and answers most interesting to them.
Outside of student journalism, his writing has been featured in the Saanich News, The Outtake, CVV, CFUV, and EAT Magazine. His photographs have appeared in Concrete Garden, the Times Colonist, and several Black Press newspapers. He created a crowdfunding video for LifeCycles Project Society, a local food sustainability NGO, and has photographed for the Victoria Symphony, the Tibetan Kitchen, GeaZone, UVic’s “Let’s Get Consensual” campaign, and SocialCoast.
In the summer of 2016, he worked with Parks Canada to plan online marketing campaigns, take photographs, and occasionally dig for clams.
Among his friends, he is notorious for his knowledge about current events as well as such esoteric subjects as high-end office chairs, cars, cameras, bidet-equipped toilet seats, and celebrity gossip.
He looks forward to your letters.
